BROOKLANDS PE DEPARTMENT

The Physical Education Department is a vibrant, industrious and outstanding department. Brooklands PE is more than the ability to run, jump, throw and catch. We believe that Physical Education at Brooklands is a powerful tool to help equip our students with strategies that will positively impact on our wider society. Through physical education, we provide our students with a vast number of experiences, which are instrumental in developing them into resilient, responsible, resourceful and respectful people. We want our students to reflect on these experiences, in order to discover their own relationship with physical activity. To aid this we are taking part in a number of initiatives: Girls active, Active Minds, Run 4 Fun and This Girl Can (Girls FA).  We are also completing our own research in how we can increase all pupils' physical activity.

Brooklands PE has a wide diverse curriculum, which covers over 25 different sports throughout the academic year, which every pupil has access to.  The curriculum is designed a spiral curriculum, meaning pupils have the opportunity to revisit and transfer skills learnt from sport to sport.  We have a variety of mixed and single sex lessons as we believe this gives our pupils the best opportunities to learn.  This approach we feel allows the development of key life and skills for the world of work, whilst recognising the value and progression of the core skills needed to enjoy a range of different sports.

Brooklands PE is using the primary PE funding to continually expand their curriculum and provide different opportunities to all pupils.  This has included buying trampolines, Judo and dance sessions and having specialist coaches.

Extracurricular Sports and Competition

The department runs over a 100 clubs a year which include morning, lunch and after school. These clubs are all free and every pupil has access to these. The focus of these clubs is to have fun and to experience different sports plus also provide opportunities for high level skill improvement. We endeavour to give all of our students a wide range of experiences, which facilitate the development of valuable life skills, create life-long memories and promote perpetual involvement in sport and physical activity. Over 60% of the school attended a sports club last year.

As part of the Leighton and Linslade School Sport Partnership we are very lucky to have access to a huge amount of competitions within the local area.  These include a large number of inclusion festivals.  We attend all competitions as we feel every pupil should have the opportunity to take part in competition and physical activity plus have experiences of competing at county level.  Brooklands PE also extend their competitions by entering the national competitions too, with great success. Over 50% of the school represented the department at a competition last year.

Leadership

It is not all about competing in sport.  Brooklands PE this year have started the Sport Leader Level 1 certification course. This allows pupils to develop skills that are needed for leading and everyday life. This course gives pupils to see that there are so many different roles within sport and it is not all about competing.
